Southlands Community Snapshot

Southlands is the West Side’s semi-rural pocket: an urban equestrian enclave of large estate lots, hobby farms, riding paddocks and riverfront greenways. The neighbourhood’s low density, connected trails and river frontage create a country-like feel inside Vancouver’s municipal boundary. Public green space and riverfront trails meet private equestrian facilities and golf courses, while the Southlands Plan (1988) protects the area’s farm-and-stable character.

Proximity to the Fraser River and to UBC and the city’s golf and recreational facilities makes Southlands appealing to buyers seeking space, privacy and outdoor lifestyle within a short drive of core West Side amenities. The community is active around trail stewardship, resident associations and equestrian culture; it also sees occasional film shoots and location work because of its distinctive, non-urban character.

Shopping & Services

Commercial services are minimal within Southlands, limited to equestrian centres/stables, golf clubs/courses, and the Southlands Nursery, a long-standing garden centre and landscape supplier.

Daily shopping and retail are found in adjacent neighbourhoods, such as Dunbar and Kerrisdale. On-street convenience and small service nodes exist near Southwest Marine Drive, but major grocery/retail trips are necessary outside the neighbourhood’s boundary.

Southlands Nursery is one of the very few retail businesses located within this exclusive Vancouver enclave.

Education in Southlands

Magee Secondary School in Kerrisdale also serves students from Southlands.

There are no major school campuses inside the Southlands boundary.

  • Public Elementary Schools: within catchment for Southlands Elementary in Dunbar.
  • Public Secondary School: nearby catchments include Point Grey and Magee in West Point Grey and Kerrisdale.

  • Nearby Independent Schools: Crofton House School (for girls), St. George’s School (for boys), Immaculate Conception School (co-ed Catholic) in neighbouring areas.
  • Post-Secondary: The University of British Columbia is 5 – 7 km to the west and accessible via public transit routes on 41st & 49th avenues.

Civic & Cultural Facilities

As a primarily residential area with a rural character, Southlands lacks community centres, libraries, civic facilities, cultural venues, and places of worship of its own. These are found in Kerrisdale, Dunbar, and West Point Grey.

Southlands Parks & Recreation

This semi-rural enclave features equestrian facilities, golf courses, riverside parks, and trails that are a world removed from Downtown Vancouver’s urban bustle.

  • Balaclava Park: sports fields, walking paths.
  • Deering Island Park: small island river park, waterfront views, short walking trail, birdlife.
  • Fraser River Park: rolling lawns, boardwalks through restored tidal marsh, picnic areas, river access, and an off-leash dog area nearby.
  • Marine Drive Golf Club: private, 18-hole course on a compact 105-acre site founded in 1922.
  • McCleery Golf Course: 18-hole public golf course, driving range, practice facilities, mature trees and water features.
  • Musqueam Golf & Learning Academy: public 9-hole course and driving range operated by Musqueam First Nation.
  • Musqueam Park: wooded natural trails, equestrian paths, wildlife corridor, soccer fields, open clearings.
  • Point Grey Golf & Country Club: private, members-only facility with an 18-hole championship course.
  • Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club: private, members-only 18-hole course with elite facilities.
  • Southlands Riding Club: indoor/outdoor arenas, stables, riding trails, training programs.

Community Life

Southlands attracts residents who prize space, privacy, and an outdoor lifestyle inside the city. The neighbourhood’s social life is quieter and more dispersed than a commercial village. Community interaction tends to be organized around green-space activities, school catchment events, and resident associations that focus on conservation, trails and equestrian interests. Local activism and stewardship are strong: residents participate in land-use discussions and upkeep of the riverfront trails.

Transportation in Southlands

With its semi-rural geography dominated by a low population density and single-family homes, travel by car is preferred. Southlands is the only area within the City of Vancouver where the public can ride horses.

  • Cycling & Bike Routes: The Fraser River Trail and the 5 km Musqueam Loop Trail are accessible to cyclists.
  • Public Transit: Service is limited to an R4 RapidBus stop at SW Marine Drive & Camosun and four stops on SW Marine Drive for the #49 bus.
  • Major Roadways: Southwest Marine Drive is the main arterial connecting the neighbourhood to UBC, YVR, and the Oak Street Bridge.
  • Alternative Transportation: This is an excellent location for horseback riding along designated trails and shared paths.
